Are you a Sheep or a Goat?

When I get the mail, I usually go through it right away. Sometimes I can tell by the envelope what’s inside. I immediately separate the mail into two groups; one group is to throw away and the other group is to keep.

The process of separating my mail reminds me of a couple of parables Jesus told. One is the parable of the wheat and the weeds [Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43]. The other is the parable of the sheep and the goats [Matthew 25:31-46].

In both parables, the wheat and the sheep represent those whom Jesus calls righteous. The weeds and the goats represent the unrighteous.

Two scriptures that explain what it means to be righteous or unrighteous are:

2 Corinthians 5:21 God made him (Jesus) who had no sin to be sin for us so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

According to the two parables, there are two kinds of people in this world; the righteous and the unrighteous. Right now both are mixed together. But there is coming a day, judgment day, when the two will be separated into groups.

One group will spend eternity with the Lord and the other group will be separated from Him forever.

Jesus says that on that day, the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father inheriting eternal life. But the unrighteous will be thrown into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth; eternal punishment.

But wait! There is good news! Today we get to choose which group we will be in on judgment day; group righteous or group unrighteous.

2 Corinthians 6:2 For he says, “In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.” I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.

Today is the day of salvation because we do not know what day the Lord Jesus will return as He said He would. Jesus said in Matthew 24:44 to always be ready for His return because He will come at an hour when we do not expect Him.

This blog is not an attempt to frighten anyone. It is, however, a wake-up call.

Jesus Himself said that He is returning and on that day there will be a judgment. The unrighteous will be judged for their sins and the righteous will be judged for their works and rewarded accordingly [2 Corinthians 5:10].

God has done all He is going to do to provide us with eternal life/righteousness. The wage of sin is death. He paid the price for all sin for all time with the sinless blood of His own Son Jesus Christ [Romans 6:23, 1 Peter 3:18]. Refusing to accept His gift of salvation is a choice to stand before Him in judgment for our own sins.

2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Let’s seriously consider our two choices today; eternal life or eternal death; separation from God.

At creation, God gave us free will. What an amazing gift! We get to choose our final destination while there is still time.

Let’s not get to judgment day and find ourselves in group weeds and goats. Let’s not choose an eternity of regret.

Deuteronomy 30:19 This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.

If you are unsure about whether you will inherit eternal life, I invite you to pray the prayer at the end of this post and mean it with all of your heart.

There is no access to God or eternal life except through Christ and His sacrifice for our sins. Jesus is the only way!

John 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Dear God, I know I am a sinner, and I ask for Your forgiveness. I believe Jesus Christ is Your Son. I believe that He died for my sin and that You raised Him to life. I want to trust Him as my Savior and follow Him as Lord, from this day forward. Guide my life and help me to do Your will through the power of Your Holy Spirit. I pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
