On a recent Saturday morning, as I stood at the stove making my husband pancakes, a conversation about the appearance of my pancakes arose. I was commenting on how sloppy my pancakes looked. I was making a mess of them. My husband said, “That’s ok! It’s not about how they look, it’s about how they taste and they taste amazing!”
My immediate thought was, “If only we viewed people in the same way we view pancakes. If only we would give people a chance before judging them by their appearance.”
None of us are perfect. We all have things that have happened to us in our life that have left us and our lives looking like a mess. Life has left all of us with scars and brokenness. Some of us are just better at hiding it or masking it than others.
When Jesus was on the earth, He was drawn to the scarred and the broken. He was criticized for hanging out with sinners; those that may be considered by some to be lowlife today.
Luke 5:31-32 Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
I don’t know about you but I am so grateful that Jesus came to call us to repentance. Because I was the sick sinner in need of repentance. I was the broken mess. I am the one with many life scars. I have been the one on the other side of judgment and criticism.
What if God would have looked down at us and said, “They are not worthy of my Son. My Son is too good for them. I don’t want my Son around those sinners. They don’t act right, they don’t look right and they don’t smell right. They are too trashy!”
Where would we be? What hope would we have?
Thankfully God doesn’t see us as worthless or trashy. In fact, He sees us in a completely opposite way.
To God we are amazing! We are created in His image.
Genesis 1:27 So God created mankind in His own image, in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them.
Psalm 139:13-14 For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
God thinks we are so valuable that He gave His one and only sinless Son to die for our sins so that we can be in a relationship with Him and live with Him for eternity (John 3:16).
What if we were to see and think about others the way God sees and thinks about us? What if we were to look past the mess, scars, and brokenness to see the value in people? What if we were to look at everyone and see a creation made in the image of the Creator?
How would our world be different? How would we be different? How would we make a difference in someone else’s life?
Let’s go out into the world today and treat people as valuable as God says they are. Let’s stop judging them by their appearance and instead see them as God sees them. Let’s look at people the way my husband looks at pancakes; no matter how they look on the outside, they are still amazing!
Dear God, I know I am a sinner, and I ask for Your forgiveness. I believe Jesus Christ is Your Son. I believe that He died for my sin and that You raised Him to life. I want to trust Him as my Savior and follow Him as Lord, from this day forward. Guide my life and help me to do Your will. I pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
